ExplorAbilities is the leading rehab center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Started nearly 40 years ago, it has served a countless number of children and adults with Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and Physical Therapy. It is well known as a premier agency that works closely with the community and cares deeply about children with special needs. EA also offers counseling services so that a full spectrum of services can be provided to clients.

When the pandemic hit in March of 2020 and threatened the future of ExplorAbilities, Mae Lynn Spahr decided this wonderful place needed to be saved for the community. She felt strongly that the developmental needs of children could not be ignored and that this “COVID-Void” would cause them to fall behind. And so she took over ExplorAbilities. She felt that with their experience with telehealth services and hygiene practices, supported by physicians that she knew, she had what it would take to keep ExplorAbilities’ doors open.

Many of the staff agreed to stay and ExplorAbilities is at full staff, having hired enthusiastic and caring providers and administrative staff. The people who work at ExplorAbilities are strong and resilient. Park visits, telehealth sessions, and office visits are available options for appointments. From babies to adults, with simple to complex issues, all are welcome to receive all services provided. We have since added Counseling services to assist patients and families to cope with challenges of dealing health and wellness issues.

The future looks good for ExplorAbilities. Despite the challenges the pandemic has presented, we have thrived, and we are well prepared to deal with another wave of the pandemic. We want to expand into the community and reduce the feelings of loneliness and despair that many have experienced. We want to support the parents who stayed home or worked long hours and still managed to get their children the services they needed. We strive to provide collaborative, comprehensive community care, and a sense of normalcy in not normal times.
